Three nurses killed, four others injured in C-5 vehicle mishap

MANILA, Philippines – A sports utility vehicle (SUV) smashed into a public utility van somewhere along the C-5 Ortigas flyover in Pasig City, reports said on Monday.

The deadly incident happened earlier on Monday, around 2:30 in the morning. Three nurses were reported to have been killed and four others were badly hurt.

According to the authorities, the driver of the SUV, with license plate KEX-246, was identified as Luis Asistio III. Police reports claimed that Asistio was allegedly under the influence of liquor which appears to be the cause of the road accident.

Asistio, alone in his Mitsubishi Montero, is said to be driving southbound when he suddenly lost control of his car. The SUV first smashed the plant boxes in the center-island of the road before it crashed against the Toyota Innova which was headed on the opposite, northbound lane.

Reports said rescuers took more than an hour to get the victims out of the vehicles as both cars were badly damaged.

The driver of the Toyota Innova Ryan Lester Yadao and all its passengers onboard, together with the drunk SUV driver, were rushed at the Rizal Medical Center and Medical City.

Three of the five passengers of the Innova, identified as Lyn Pascua, Rose Ann Ocuendo and Janine Ray Manzanida, who were all nurses, have died during the medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Yadao’s two other passengers, named Jacklyn Mae Terado and Bubbles Lapuos, both suffered head injuries.

The SUV’s driver is said to have also sustained wounds and scratches. He was conscious when he was rescued, but was unable to provide statements about the incident.

Rescue man Andy Undecimo stated that Asistio was giving off a strong smell of liquor when he was being saved. He added that they also recovered a bottle of unspecified liquor inside his vehicle.
